Elite Eight

Ohio St. was a tough game. We got home after midnight, but I was still too pumped up to go to sleep. Iowa St. is tonight. It's an earlier game (6 pm instead of 8:30) and we're taking the bus this time. Iowa St. is one of those teams that can get hot from behind the three point line. If they are, it will be a tough game to win. If they are not, it will be ON to St. Louis!

I've got to go work out, eat and get to the bus to the game!

I'm either hip or due for a new one

Just got our new I-phones and set up my 24" IMAC (not that size matters) and Sheri's Macbook. We will be able to sync up for lunches and vacations. I've put her down for next Tuesday at Tamarine.

I loved my old apple IIE (remember Wizard?) but the chess applications on the PC were so superior there was no choice, but to go PC. Since I am no longer a competitive chess player, I am free to go back where I belong. Since I own a MAC, I must be hip, even though my right one hurts all the time.

Looking towards the regionals.

Not only did #2 seed Stanford win, but #1 seed Duke lost. Stanford next plays #3 seed Ohio State on Saturday in Berkeley. At this stage, everybody can play.

Shot a 94 at Palo Alto Muni today, which is not good, but not bad considering the long layoff. My short game (chipping and putting) is off, but my short irons were good. There's hope!

March Madness

OK, I'm more into the women's bracket than the men's, but I am enjoying both. I have, of course, picked UConn in the women's going with my head over my heart. I have North Carolina in the men's purely as a show of support for President Obama. President Obama! I don't get tired of hearing or saying that.

I'm in charge of my dog.

Sheri is in Sacramento, Maya is at home, and there is noone to distract Macy while I "work" at my computer. She has come in three times already, and I have given her two treats. The third time I held firm, and she has reluctently settled down at my feet. I realize that this is only a temporary resolution. It is a matter of time before she uses her super powers on me, and I submit to her will.

Watching Watchmen

Man, that was one violent movie! Three hours is a long time, but overall I'd say I was glad I went.

As predicted

Stanford gets the #2 seed in the West regional behind Duke. This is OKAY with me, even if it means the selection committee considers the ACC to be twice as good as the Pac Ten. Stanford can win this regional, and I would favor them over Duke, if they both win out.

Slection Monday

4pm ESPN.

Title game tonight

Only Stanford will be playing USC instead of Cal. Sheri and I went to LA to watch their regular season matchup. I expect Stanford to win again, but not easily. I'm currently recording the Duke-Maryland game, because I suspect Stanford will be the number 2 seed where Duke is number 1. That worked out fine last year when Stanford was number 2 and Maryland was #1. Last year's wins over Maryland and then UConn where special indeed.

Pac-Ten Tourney

I had no idea that Sheri and I would get so into Stanford women's basketball. I'm feeling bereft that there are no more home games! I thought Arizona would be a real handful last night, but Stanford's three point shooting turned the game into a cakewalk. Tonight it is UCLA, while Cal takes on USC.

Awards add up for Stanford women

Wow! Jane Appel is named player of the year for the Pac-10. Tara is named coach of the year. Jillian and Jeanette make the second team. Kayla makes third team, and Nekka makes the freshman team.

I think I will understand, if Stanford is not a 1 seed. UConn is UConn. Gotta go with the Sooners and Terps too. That leaves Stanford butting heads with Duke (just as they did last year with Maryland.) Duke flat out has more quality wins than Stanford does, but I fully expect Stanford will beat Duke on a neutral court, if they play again. I'm hoping they do!

First round of 2009

I got to play 18 holes of golf today. Luckily, I exist in the present, and enjoyed myself, avoiding any need to be results oriented. Well, almost. When I posted my score the system asked for confirmation, because in its own softwary way, it said the score was "higher than normal." So judgemental!

My wife's pet nickname for me

I hear the word "tiger" whenever she says "bunny". Techniques such as this one are a key to a healthy relationship.

Working out at the Y

Sheri is shaming me into going to work out. Honestly, without her (gentle) prodding, I would be lost.

V.A. Hospital

Volunteering at the V.A. hospital. We had a nice chess program there for awhile until they made some staff changes. Now, Ron is back and so are we!

Stanford wins!

Okay, how can they NOT be a number one seed in the tournament (NCAA not Pac-10) or am I missing something????

#18 Arizona St. vs. #2 Stanford

Arizona State has won 15 in a row and are coming off of a convincing win over Cal. It should be a fun game. Macy will stay with Brian and Janice (and Maya, of course) while we go early and stay late!

Stanford slips past Arizona

Tough game! Arizona is near the bottom of the conference, but they really came to play last night. Thomas was impressive and their post play was much better than I expected. Hard to believe they only have four conference wins.

Tomorrow it is Arizona St. coming off a big win against Cal. It should be exciting!

Chip off the old tooth

Oh, well. I do like Blue Corn Tortilla chips, but apparently my dental work didn't. There is a new bridge in my future, and not the kind you drive over!

Pederson Pac-10 Player of the week

Kayla Pederson was named player of the week based on her back to back 20 point games in Los Angeles. I think Jane has been named player of the week 3 times this year, and that this is a first for Kayla.

Stanford women ranked number 2

We watched UConn vs. Rutgers and, although Rutgers fought hard, the issue was never in doubt. The Rutgers center looked very big when they played at Maples, but UConn's Tina Charles made her look unimposing. It's hard to see how anyone can match up with Montgomery either. USC's point guard seemed to penetrate fairly easily. She may be the best point guard in the pac 10, but I don't know that she's as good as Montgomery.

It's very clear that UConn deserves to be ranked first.

That's using your head

Stanford 85 USC 74...but it was a close game for much of the afternoon. USC just wouldn't go away. Coupled with Cal's loss to UCLA, this means that the Cardinal can wrap up a regular season championship by sweeping the Arizona schools.

Kayla Pederson was a rock the entire game, scoring when needed, rebounding and playing stellar defense. Jane got off to a slow start but finished with 20. Neke had 17 along with 8 boards.

Poor Jeanette! I didn't see the blow, but I saw her recoil from it and drop to the floor. Most likely it was an elbow, and it obviously hurt. She stayed down for awhile and was wobbly walking off the floor. This is her second head injury of the season and I'm worried about her.

Her outstanding back court play is one reason the Cardinal are on an 11 game win streak. We're packing up to start the drive back to Menlo Park.
